Butler County Youth Dayby Erik Nilsson
Today was the annual Butler County Youth Field day, where approximately 300 youths attended a daylong event to experience different aspects of the outdoors. Several stations were set up along the club property and the seminars included Archery, Air rifles, Trap shooting, Canoeing, Trapping, Waterfowling, and others. The kids were divided up into groups of 10 and rotated from station to station. I was excited to be asked to help out with the waterfowl seminar for the kids. We wanted to put on as realistic of a scenario as possible for them and get them actively involved with our station. Shaun had brought along his Chessie, Drake, to do the retrieving along with the gear we needed. We set up our area with the Avery® Finisher Blind and the Avery® Finisher Dog Blind surrounded by the GHG® Fully Flocked Lesser Canada Goose Decoys. We added a few GHG® hot buys mallards and GHG® full body mallards to finish out our set up. Our seminar included topics on decoys, blinds, calling and dog work. Throughout the day the kids were allowed to experience sitting in a blind, sending the dog to make a retrieve and setting up decoys. We were able to get a flock of geese take a look at us and a single to make an attempt to land in the decoys for a group to see. It was a great day to see the fun the kids had and giving us the great pleasure of knowing that possibly they may get to experience a real life hunt of their own someday. |
