Breanna Boudry
Hello, my name is Breanna Marie Boudry and I am 13 yrs. Old. I live in west Bend WI and love to waterfowl hunt and also do some deer and pheasant.
In summer of 2006 I was chosen to be 1 of 12 kids out of 2500 green wings in the state to attend a ducks unlimited green wing camp in central WIS. Green wings are young kids under the age of 16 or 17 yrs. old. I was the youngest camper there and was also chosen in my first year of eligibility. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity, as once you are chosen to attend you cannot attend again. We did bird banding, shooting skills, and wildlife ecology there, we also toured a few wildlife areas and refuges and had a local warden visit with us.3 nights and 4 full days at no cost to me or my parents. This was done with donations and support from different companies and stores.
Also in Aug. of 2006 I competed in the WIS. State duck and goose calling competition here in West Bend. I was the first ever female to compete in the history of the competition. I was able to get a 2nd place in the goose and a third in the duck. my story has appeared in a edition of the Wisconsin water fowlers association magazine.
In my spare time I volunteer for all things I can and have volunteered the last 5 yrs. or so for the DU festival in Oshkosh WIS. And have also helped my dad at his local DU events and dinners/banquets for many years also.
I have had several articles pertaining to me and my dad appear in the local media outlets, such as the West Bend News, Wisconsin outdoor news, and the Wisconsin Waterfowlers assn magazine.
Most recently I entered the Illinois waterfowl alliance calling contest in Moline Ill. This was a very hard contest but I was able to get thru my duck routine without any problem at all. There were many great callers in my 13 to 17 yr. old age group, but once again, I was the only female contestant there in any age group. I ended up placing 7th out of 13 callers, a real good showing and I was really pleased.
For competition calling I am presently using a ZINK open water power hen call for ducks and am quickly learning the short reed goose call. Also I am practicing very hard for the WIS. competition here in Aug. along with my dad, he is constantly blowing his calls and says he calls on the way to work in the morning, I believe him, he sounds really good now.
In my first full year of waterfowl hunting of 2006/2007 I was able to shoot 8 Canada geese including 1 banded goose. all of them were flying and was very proud for doing so well my first year. I also was able to hunt 3 states in 2006/2007 including a short hunt in Michigan for some video footage hunting geese and a spring snow goose hunt in Missouri, where I was able to shoot my first snow and blue goose and also my first Ross goose. My dad is having them all put on the wall for me as he has not shot any like this either until our trip. we hunted some of the most difficult geese to decoy and the most extreme weather as we had winds of 30 mph and blowing snow, if I was asked to go again I would leave as soon as I could. it was awesome.
As far as contests go for the spring of 2007 we went to the foiles migrators waterfowl weekend and entered the duck calling contest for juniors and I was the only female caller there as well. I am getting used to being the only girl from the Midwest to competition call. I know there are more out there. In the spring of 2007 I was chosen to be on the AYFS (Avery Youth Field Staff) at that time I was one of only two females on the staff.
Also in the year of 2007 I competed in the WI. State duck and goose and finished 4th in the duck and third in the goose, again being the only girl caller. This year I have entered the 2008 Minnesota Ladies duck calling contest. I placed first and was so excited. This was my first ever first place win. I beat the three time back to back to back champion. I also entered the Wisconsin state and took third I was once again the only girl there. My goals for the future are to continue school and become a veterinarian or some sort of wildlife ecologist, or a natural resource warden to help protect the resources for all to enjoy. I also want to become a better duck and goose caller and continue to compete if possible and try harder to get more kids into the outdoors thru seminars or hands on experiences. Even though I am only 14 and a female I am not afraid to get dirty, wet, cold, or smell like marsh mud.
My family consists of my dad, Shawn and my mom, Stephanie. My older brother Adam he is 20 and is an army reservist he hunts to but is very busy. Then we have my older sister who is 19, her name is Trista she hunted for 1 or 2 yrs. but did not like it. Me, I love it. We have had so many ducks and geese land so close to us it is hard to believe how close they come. We hunt the exterior zone for geese and small lakes and fields, rivers for ducks around the West Bend area.
I shoot a 12.guage 3 ½" Benelli Super Nova express and use Kent, Winchester, Remington shells. I prefer bb shot for geese and #1 or #2 shot for ducks.
